WeirdMusic.net EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS - Ólafur Arnalds

Do you Like/Write Weird Music ?

I like weird music, but i don't think the music i write is very weird.. It's unconventional maybe, but not weird.

- When and where did your experience in music start?
Music school... age of 5. I played flute.

- What are you currently working on and what are your plans for the rest of the year ?
I'm doing a few things at once at the moment actually.. I'm currently writing a score for this big American TV advertisement, I'm recording my next full length album (released next winter) and I'm working on a score for a new Ballet by Wayne McGregor (premiered at Sadler's Wells in London, October 13th)

- What do you consider your greatest inspirational sources in music ?
Other people, friends, family, especially those who are also musicians and our talks about music.

- Please describe your personal studio for us...
It's not amazing... ProTools LE, Event TR6 monitors, a few midi controllers, piano, budget mics... Plugged to a MacBook Pro.

- What are your favorite readings ?
Currently i'm loving Oliver Sacks' "The man who mistook his wife for a hat". It's a book about weird neurological illnesses. I mostly read science. Been trying to understand Quantum Physics lately.. it's not easy, i tell you.

- In your opinion, what role does the third sector, public and non-
profit entities; have for music on the Internet ?

The full answer to that question would be 3 pages long.. In the current market it's very important to connect the artists directly to the audience. non-profit and third sector entities usually proof as the best tools to do so. It's important to give something first before expecting people to buy something off you.

- Are you religious ?
Not at all. But have nothing against it.

Breaking classical music out of the tweed jacket and loafers and putting it into a t-shirt and trainers

Ólafur Arnalds brings his unique classically inspired music to the clubs, warehouses, and festival stages

At only 21 years of age, Ólafur Arnalds is Iceland's latest export. Having already sold out The Barbican Hall in London, toured major European festivals and having opened for Sigur Rós on their most recent European tour, the future seems bright for this young, extraordinary talent.

The music of Ólafur Arnalds can only be described as achingly beautiful. He creates a world of delicate symphonic compositions.

His music scales the heights perfected by the romantics. Yet by mixing strings and piano with loops and edgy beats it remains equally engaging to the contemporary ear.

Succeeding in making the cross-over from classical to pop, Ólafur's motivations are clear:
“The classical scene is kind of closed to people who haven't been studying music all their lives. I would like to bring my classical influence to the people who don't usually listen to this kind of music…open people's mind. Especially young people, who seem to be the biggest part of my audience...”

Minds have been opened at sold out concerts around the world. For the past year, Ólafur has been playing unique venues and festivals across Europe and North America delivering an oasis of calm in a frenzied world. Accompanied by a string quartet, Ólafur takes the audience on a dreamy, almost meditative, journey. The magical atmosphere he creates attracts an audience who wouldn't usually expect to find themselves at a concert including a string quartet and piano.

Following the great success of his début album, Eulogy for Evolution, and the follow-up EP, Variations of Static, Ólafur took his remodelling of classical music one step further. In April 2009 he created Found Songs, a series of songs written and recorded, one per day, for a whole week and then released for free through his Twitter and Facebook pages. The songs were downloaded over 40.000 times in the first week alone....
