- Give me some basic information about yourself. (Where are you from? Where do/did you go to high school/college? What are some of your main interests and hobbies? etc )
Hey there! My name is Sarah Miki Watanabe, but I go by Miki. I'm an alternative model of Japanese, Indian and Finnish descent.
My passion is in the arts, specifically modelling and visual art.
I also have a heavy interest in philosophy, psychology and spiritual psychotherapy.I've designed a workshop about healing Eating disorders through the context of spiritual psychotherapy, and have presented this workshop to various groups of at-risk youth.
I consider myself extremely progressive and devote a lot of time to community anti oppression work such as working on rallies. The various problems in our society are my inspiration for change.
Lastly, I love to write poetry and playing music. Whether it be guitar or piano, I love putting my poems to music and composing rad songs.

- How would you describe your professional interests?

I'm an alternative model and visual artist (Feel free to check out my art at www.mikisstudio.com )
I love doing the creative direction of photoshoots that I model in, a collaboration that photographers often love as many enjoy the realism aspect of photography but have a harder time with the fantasy aspect...which is where I come in, to help with the creative design of a conceptual photoshoot. It's totally fun putting together the concepts and sets of a shoot you are going to be modelling in! I'm passionate about both print and runway modelling.
- What's your background in modeling? When and why did you get started? Was it for the glamour? The money? Pure kicks?

I started modelling when I was 14 and stumbled upon a contest at the mall that was looking for ten fashion forward girls to represent their shopping site. After being chosen as one of the winners, I modelled in my first runway show and instantly fell in love with modelling.
I began modelling more in the following years after finding a certain magic in it that was incomparable to anything I'd ever felt before...since my background is in visual art, it captivated me after I felt as though I had become the paint, being on the other side of the canvas so to speak, was such an exhilerating feeling. I create art in order to manifest beauty in it's most pure form, and through modelling, being able to become the pigment through which that beauty is created was joyful in a surprisingly direct and honest way. I pursued modelling for the sheer thrill of the art form.
- Who are some of your favorite models and designers ?
I love the effortless edgyness of Chloe Memisevic, and I like Andrej Pejic for being such a traiblazer in the fashion world, and breaking the boundaries of social norms. When it comes to designers I adore Betsey Johnsons quirky dresses and Alexander Mcqueens dark gothic looks.

 - Which fashion magazines, websites, blogs, and catalogs do you visit most often?

- Do you have any other experience in the fashion industry (writing, photography, marketing, etc.)?

I was a Style Spy Girl for a year at a popular vancouver fashion resource:  www.thesetylespy.com , which gave me an inside look being part of their street team-- this entailed fashion spotting of innovative trends as seen on every day fashionastas.

- What other modeling projects have you done? Could you provide links?

The runway show for my first fashion show when I was 14 can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZksm-FP9ew
I also modelled in a fashion show for Spill it Sister, a local boutique with threads from Spain, Italy, etc.
My most recent show was A Holiday Affair http://blog.lasallecollegevancouver.com/a-holiday-affair-graduation-eventfashion-show , which was a rad runway show where I got a chance to work with designers exhibiting at Vancouver Fashion Week as well as getting runway lessons from a proffesional runway coach.
Recently a photographer and I were location scouting at a boutique downtown and ran into the designer of the Killa brand..and we ended up doing an impromptu photoshoot modelling one of his new belts...this is one of my favorite shots from the shoot http://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/21525334
- Out of all of the photos the photographer took of you, which is your favorite and why?
My favorite photo that's been captured of me is the attached picture. I'm starting to get into the whole BDSM thing, so I like how kinky it is, but I mostly love what the sword represents, in terms of empowerment towards women and being confident and sexy while being in control of ones's sexuality; it's a statement that opposes the message of female sexuality being controlled by males that we are constantly being fed in the media.

- What is fun and rewarding about modeling?
Modelling is fun because creating beautiful imagery is always a good time, and thats what our world needs: beauty, truth and goodness!
I also love dressing up and am a bit of a closet exhibitionist ;)

- What do you dislike about modeling?
I dislike that the modelling world can sometimes lead people to become overly focussed on outer appearances, particularily weight. It is a common misconception that modelling is all about looks, and I dislike when people assume I'm a bimbo or that I starve myself just because I am a model. In fact, being an advocate of eating disorder awareness, I try hard to spread the message to other models that it is possible to be slender through healthy means that work with your body, as opposed to starving into weakness.

- Your Favorite MTV Artist/Band ?
I'm not a huge fan of mainstream music, I'm into the underground electronic scene which in Vancouver is pretty dope. I listen to lots of dubstep, drum n bass, grime and breakcore, artists like Hecate, Drumcorps, and Skrillex.
I guess if I had to pick an MtV band though it would be Death Cab for Cutie (I believe they have been seen on MTV..)
- Porn or Horn ?

- Anything else you'd like to say?

Looking forward to collaborating and making some beautiful art!
