EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - Drew Darcy, from Envy Of Saints
- Do you Like/Write Weird Music ?
I like weird music. I'll always throw in a bit of weirdness when writing a song, to try and give it that edge.
- When and where did your experience in music start ?
I had a Casio keyboard when I was very young (Casio Tone CT-310 to be exact).
I spent hours writing songs in my bedroom; recording my composition on an old tape recorder. This was the start of my interest in music and song writing. I picked up a guitar a few years later. I thought if I could learn to play, girls would like me.
- What are you currently working on and what are your plans for the rest of the year ?
Lead singer for Envy Of Saints - a weird four piece consisting of myself (Drew Darcy), Christophe Chantzis, Erik Vanspauwen and Erik Hubo. We have just finished and released our debut album “Junk Love”, and its now available to download on iTunes ( and all other good reputable music sites). It's an Electronic/ Rock sound. We describe our sound as an electro, musical riot...soaked in vocal mayhem.
Envy Of Saints are continuing to work and write new material. The next step will be to get the live show together and take our sound to a live audience
I've also been writing, singing and featuring on various tracks from a number of different producers. More recently with Lenny B, you can hear my vocals on - “ The Night Belongs To You” by Lenny B Ft. Drew Darcy, also available to download now.
Future featurings include releases with Bootmasters, A.Lua'Sol, and Joe Bermudez.
- What do you consider your greatest inspirational sources in music ?
Bands like: The Police, U2, The Killers, Depeche Mode, Huey Lewis and the News, Nirvana, The Beach Boys, John Lennon, David Bowie, Coldplay, Editors, Bloc Party, Kings of Leon…..
- Best Song Ever ?
“With or Without You” by U2 …..or the next song I'm going to write.
- Please describe your personal studio for us... (optional question)
My studio is a 3x5m insulated log cabin in my garden. It's a great creative space for my music and its also a place where I paint, as I'm also a published figurative artist. You can check out my art at www.drewdarcy.co.uk .
- Do You Like Your Voice On Your Answering Machine ?
No, even I can't understand what I'm saying, let alone the person trying to call. I sound weird.
- What are your favourite readings ?
Alice in Wonderland, High Fidelity by Nick Hornby , How to Lose Friends & Alienate People by Toby Young , Delia Smith (cook book)
- In your opinion, what role does the third sector, public and non-
profit entities; have for music on the Internet ? (crazy semi-optional question)
For me, “Wikipedia” is a great non profit organisation which I often use on the internet. It's a free online encyclopedia, edited by worldwide web users. If I'm writing lyrics on a subject I'm not sure about, I'll sometimes check my facts on there. It often sparks an idea when I'm stuck for words and helps me in my song writing.
- Are you religious ?
I'd like to believe there is something after this life. I was brought up as a Catholic but I haven't been to church in a very long time. I was taught right from wrong when growing up and I'd liked to think I'm now a good, and decent human.
- The person you would never want to meet ?
A man in a long hooded cape, carrying a scythe….It never ends well.
- If you were another person would you be friends with you?
I might accept me as a friend on Facebook ,but I can be very elusive.
- What is your best physical attribute ?
I have good piano hands. But I don't really play very well.
- Do you have a secret talent and what is it ?
I make a mean Lasagna.
- 3 things you cannot live without ?
My guitar, the internet and the air I breathe
- Why you do THIS ?
I can't help myself. I'm generally quite a quiet person, so I want to create something so great, it will be too hard to ignore and I'll get heard eventually.
- What is one unique thing are you afraid of ?
What I might say next.
- If you were a worm, how long would you be ?
- Who is Wacky Jacky ?
Michael Jackson's cousin.
- Porn or Horn ?
70's porn, just for the funky soundtrack.
- Are you an Idiot ?
On the weekdays, but the weekends I Rock!…..hard.
- Does your grandmother wash HIMself ?
Only when it rains .
- Do you hate your ex Girl/Boy Friend ?
So many girls... so little time, lets leave it at that.
- Huh ??

'The Cut' being played on BBC Radio
Alex Ross-Iver's latest album, an experimental electro-punk tour-de-force eccentrically named BeatLes, (don't forget the 'L'), is an all-in-one source for pure beat driven pop pleasure, and deviant experimental weirdness. The title track Ahn2, (who needs song titles?), blends the dance-ability of A-ha with the brashness of The White Stripes and adds, as usual, Ross-Iver's famous off-the-wall creativity. It is as though a-ha and Jack White have been sucked into a comic book love story, only to discover that it is being directed by David Lynch, and the handsome hero turns out to be, in fact, The Man From Another Place (you know, the dwarf guy who speaks backwards). Wackiness aside, this album will definitely keep your attention and will keep your feet tapping. Check it out:
